THE PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE - Brian Leonard
February 23, 2024

Greetings Colleagues,

There is something magical about the late winter on Vancouver Island, and I feel fortunate this past week to have visited two Chapters in this part of the province. I will share some highlights in an upcoming column, but thank you to our members in SD68 (Nanaimo Ladysmith) and SD62 (Sooke) for the warm welcome and great conversations.

This week’s Island visit also included the annual tradition of the Budget Day “lock-up” on Thursday. I joined with Acting Executive Director Magdalena Kassis – alongside government officials, media, business leaders, and community partners – for a session where we could preview the budget and ask questions behind closed doors, prior to the formal release. It truly is a “lock-up”, as cell phones are prohibited in the venue, and no outside contact can be made; it makes you recognize and appreciate our dependence on our phones and other devices!

Earlier this week, we distributed the February 2023 Chapter Council Summary to our members. In last week’s column, I talked about the group of young women from SD42 (Maple Ridge) who joined us to open the Friday Chapter meeting; I would like to mention again their mission to speak the names and tell the stories of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls. They will be encouraging others to ‘walk the walk’ in May to create awareness and honour Red Dress Day.

We were grateful on Friday to welcome BCPVPA members Beth Applewhite (SD41) and Kenneth Headley (SD40) to introduce their organization, the BC Black Educational Leaders Association (BCBELA), with a mission to empower and inspire educators who self-identify as Black, or of Black African descent. Beth and Kenneth offered critical context around the experiences of black educators in BC schools, and how our members can ensure that their interactions with their colleagues, students, and families are both anti-racist and supportive.

Our regular Chapter Council meetings provide the opportunity for members from across the province to connect and share ideas, and a setting is also established for dialogue with the Ministry of Education and Child Care and other important partners. To open Saturday’s meeting, we welcomed Jennifer McCrea, Assistant Deputy Minister System Liaison and Supports Division, and Danielle Carter-Sullivan, Executive Director, Early Learning, Mental Health, and Student Safety, who each provided a number of updates and invited feedback from attendees.

Jennifer talked about student success in the BC context, and the impact of different factors in the system including workforce strategies for recruitment and retention, affordability challenges for families, and networks promoting mental health. Jennifer also highlighted the status of the plan for addressing student cell phone use in school, and invited the ideas of our members to help with the development of an implementation guide.

Danielle spoke about the revision of the BC erase site, and noted its evolution from a site focused on strategies to eliminate bullying, to a site with extensive information about building safe and caring school communities.

We were pleased that Jack MacNeill, Founder and President of humanworks, could join us to close out Saturday’s session. Jack left attendees with words that encouraged a proactive approach to managing our health and well-being, with a focus on resiliency, wellness, and balance as an ongoing process of care.

The Friday and Saturday meetings offered a great blend of information and conversation; I encourage you to read Tuesday’s Member Update, and I hope that the dialogue can continue in your own local Chapter meetings.

I look forward to connecting with you next week.

Have a great weekend,

Brian
