Last week, the BCPVPA Board of Directors passed a very special motion, which, while not unprecedented, did depart from our typical practice. SOGI language, as articulated in BC Human Rights Act legislation, was incorporated into BC school Codes of Conduct almost a decade ago without controversy, and required public schools to be inclusive and non-discriminatory in their policies and practices. Read more.

Remembrance Day, November 11, is a recognition of all the brave Canadians – Indigenous and non-Indigenous – who served and continue to serve our country in war, conflict, and peace. The assemblies and ceremonies that mark this day are also about remembering those who returned home forever changed by the trauma of violent conflict, and we acknowledge the sacrifice of their service. Read more.

On October 28, in a ceremony at Government House in Victoria, I represented our 2,700 members at the 2023 Premier’s Awards for Excellence in Education. The event is in its fifth year, and Premier David Eby presented awards which acknowledged the exceptional contribution of education professionals within the BC education system. Read more.

Last April, I had the pleasure of visiting St’a7mes School in Squamish. The mostly Indigenous students in this school participated in carving a totem pole as part of a community project. Several weeks ago, I felt fortunate to see the completed pole installed and displayed at the Provincial Park and campsite at Porteau Cove. I will soon also share an update on my recent experience at the International Confederation of Principals conference. It was enlightening to hear about the common challenges of school leadership from around the world. Read more.

In BC and throughout Canada, September 30 is a significant day to honour the resilience, strength, and healing journeys of residential school survivors and their families. It is also a day to remember the children who never came home. The continued discoveries at former Indian Residential Schools have sparked outrage, sadness, and somber reflection upon the generations of children who were forcibly taken from their families. Read more.
