THE PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE - Brian Leonard

May 3, 2024

Greetings Colleagues,

And, suddenly, it’s May! The fabled month of ‘AprilMayJune’ is progressing, and there is a lot going on.

This is a time of change and transition, as we are close to wrapping up the year, but have so much to think about as we look ahead. For some people, that can mean a new school, or even a new role. If you have a colleague who is moving into a leadership role in the coming months, be sure to let them know about Foundations for New School Leaders, one of our core learning programs. Foundations – formerly known as ‘Short Course’ – is in its 47th year, and has been pivotal in leadership development for generations of our members. We are so grateful that many of our members support Foundations each year as facilitators, and it is both a generous and fulfilling way to give back to the Association.

Another way that several of our members are giving back this week is through the launch of their respective 2024 campaigns for a Director seat on the BCPVPA’s Board. The Candidate Statements were released on May 1, and this document is an essential guide to the priorities of each of the candidates. What are the issues that are important to you as a member? Which of the candidates best represents your thoughts and your needs? You have two weeks to get to know these colleagues, and to better understand the skills and knowledge that they can bring to your Board of Directors.

The Candidate Video Speeches were released this morning, and give you the opportunity to hear directly from the candidates. Tonight, at our May Chapter Council in Vancouver, we will hear from the candidates in a live setting as they deliver their campaign speeches to our attending Chapter Presidents and representatives. We thank our candidates for the time and thought that they have dedicated to this pursuit, and for their willingness to take on this commitment. I urge our members to check in with their Chapter executives to find out more about what they heard from the candidates this weekend.

Earlier this week, I was able to attend the CAPSLE (Canadian Association for the Practical Study of Law in Education) conference in Toronto which was a wonderful opportunity to network with colleagues from across the country and gain important knowledge about the legal aspects and considerations of our sector.

Brian with newly elected CAPSLE President Melissa Eldridge

Next week, I will be heading out on my final Chapter visits of the year, and I am really excited to spend some time in your communities. I hope to see you soon!

Have a great weekend,

Brian
