The roar of the crowd can be heard around the world.
This week, Vancouver is alive with the energy, colour, and possibility of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Nations have arrived. Dreams are being realized. Athletes are stepping onto the world's biggest stage.
And, across British Columbia, another season of dreams being realized is quietly unfolding.
Graduation season.
At first glance, a World Cup and a graduation ceremony may seem worlds apart. One is revealed on a global stage before millions. The other takes place in gymnasiums, hockey arenas, theatres, community centres, and school fields.
Yet both celebrate something remarkably similar.
Potential.
The FIFA World Cup reminds us that greatness is never achieved alone. Every player who steps onto the pitch does so because of countless hours of practice, coaching, encouragement, setbacks, and support. Behind every athlete stands a team.
The same is true for every graduate who walks across the stage with dignity, purpose, and options this month.
Behind every graduate is a family, a teacher, a friend, a support worker, a coach, a Principal, a Vice-Principal, and a community that believes in them.
No one reaches the finish line alone.
As educational leaders, we have the privilege of witnessing the journey.
We see the student who struggled and persevered.
We see the student who discovered their voice.
We see the student who found belonging.
We see the student who learned that success is not always about winning; sometimes it is about getting back up after a difficult season and continuing forward.
Like the beautiful game itself, education is ultimately a team sport.
This month we also celebrate the recipients of the BCPVPA Scholarships.
These young people have distinguished themselves through leadership, service, resilience, citizenship, and commitment to their communities. They remind us that leadership is not defined by a title. It is defined by how we contribute to the success of others.
Our scholarship recipients represent the very best of what public education can accomplish when students are supported, challenged, and inspired.
As I have travelled throughout B.C. over the past two years, I have witnessed extraordinary leadership in every corner of our province. From urban centres to remote coastal communities, Principals and Vice-Principals are creating opportunities for students to thrive.
You are building teams.
You are developing talent.
You are creating conditions where young people can discover who they are and what they might become.
You are proving that the work matters.
Long after the final whistle blows.
Long after the stadium lights dim.
Long after the cheering ends.
The impact of education continues.
To all graduates across the province, congratulations. We are proud of your accomplishments and excited to see where your next journey takes you.
To the recipients of the BCPVPA Scholarships, congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, and our very best wishes to all of the applicants.
And to Principals and Vice-Principals, thank you for coaching, encouraging, supporting, and believing in students every day.
The FIFA World Cup may remind us of the beauty of the game.
Graduation season reminds us of the beauty of possibility.
Both begin with potential.
Both require a team.
And both leave us believing that the future is bright.
Onwards,
Dr. Shannon Behan
