THE PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE - Dr. Shannon Behan

National Principal’s Day
May 1, 2026

The moment where you are holding the keys, ready to unlock the school door: that is magic. In that instant, the building holds a hushed and comforting promise.

Lights flicker on. Hallways wait. The day is ready to unfold.

In that sudden dawning, in the quiet of the morning, Principals and Vice-Principals are often first onsite.

They are leafing through the lists. Responding to a message from a family. Checking in on a staff member. Thinking about the student who may need a little extra care. Holding the weight of decisions that will shape the tone, culture, and experience of learning for an entire community.

This is the work of Principals.

And today, on National Principal’s Day, we see you.

Across British Columbia, Principals lead in ways that are both visible and invisible. They are instructional leaders, relationship builders, problem-solvers, advocates, and steady anchors in times of uncertainty. They navigate complexity with care, often holding competing priorities while remaining grounded in what matters most: students, staff, and community.

The role has never been more complex.

And yet, what I continue to see – in schools, in districts, and in dialogue – is a depth of commitment that is both humbling and inspiring.

Principals who show up each day with courage.

Principals who lead with heart.

Principals who create spaces where students feel they belong, where staff feel supported, and where communities feel connected.

Much of this work goes unseen.

It lives in the conversations in hallways, the quiet decisions made late in the day, the moments of care that never make it into a report or a headline. But it is in these moments that the culture of a school is shaped and sustained.

Leadership at this level is not about recognition.

But today, we see you.

Today we acknowledge the extraordinary work of Principals everywhere. Thank you for the leadership you provide, the care you extend, and the difference you make.

Your work matters deeply.

It matters in the lives of students who feel seen.

It matters in the growth of staff who feel supported.

It matters in the strength of communities that trust in their schools.

And it matters to the future of public education in BC.

Thank you for all that you carry, all that you give, all that you lead, and all that you do to bring belonging, possibility, and hope to your schools.

Today, and every day, we see you.

Onwards,
Shannon
